Carl grew up on his family’s farm in Stockton, Illinois, which has been in his family since 1940.
At a young age, Carl enjoyed playing multiple instruments in his high school's jazz band, participating in the wrestling and football teams at Stockton Senior High School, and reading stories. He would eventually take his passion for literature into his higher education at Northern Illinois University where he majored in English Studies.
As a student, Carl joined Sigma Tau Delta, the International English Honors Society, and attended the society’s 75th international convention in Savannah, Georgia. The following year, he was the the Editor-in-Chief of the university’s literary and creative arts magazine, Towers. Studying a wide-ranged coursework in the humanities, including Greek mythology, modern American literature, and music history, Carl earned a Creative Writing Certificate before graduating with his Bachelor in Fine Arts in 2014.
Before joining Vertigo™ in early 2015, Carl worked as a music reporter and the opinions section editor for the Northern Star newspaper, as well as a data analyst for the Residential Administration department at NIU’s Housing & Dining office.
In his spare time, Carl enjoys reading, creating music, and traveling to new places whenever possible.
